Riding into summer, the commercial business begins to slow down, yet every year we seem surprised. When talking to an old friend of mine today about just this, I laughed as I thought out loud, “Well its not shocking we have short term memories, we do work in :60 second bytes.”

The past few months have been great. I have continues to develop my class for UCLA (see below) as well as updating info for the book that will follow the class this fall.

Also spawned from my class this summer, is a seminar I will be offering Ad Agencies beginning next month. The seminar will focus on the basic mechanic of music licensing. Terms, contracts, rules to live by when negotiating. Navigating the waters of copyright law take a great database and a few hot tips. Stay tuned.

HANK™ is seeing more traffic than ever – very exciting considering he is currently getting a MASSIVE face lift. HANK V2 will be making his debut late summer. If you don’t know HANK – check it out. http://www.hankmusic.tv

Still the reigning mantra. New opportunities, new ideas.

Best,
Sarah Gavigan/ Owner, Ten Music & HANK™

Official today – HOW TO GET YOUR MUSIC LICENSED IN A COMMERICAL. I will be teaching the class this summer at UCLA.

Having your music used in a commercial can mean relative overnight success for a little-known band, artist, or composer. But how do you get your music in the hands of the right people? In this course, learn the history of music licensing in advertising, how commercials are made, and who the decision makers are. Topics cover the basics of music publishing and learning what questions to ask to ensure that when you do get the call, you are able to secure the best deal possible. Standard contracts and best practices for dealmaking are reviewed. Techniques for marketing music to the advertising community are discussed weekly, highlighted by industry guest speakers, including advertising creative directors, agency music producers, directors, producers, and editors. This “green” course provides course materials online to minimize paper waste; Internet access required.

It gets booming beats from laptops, echoing chords from the guitar and lilting harmony vocals from the sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza, for a promising blend of the psychedelic and the futuristic.”-New York Times

ofmontreal It is fantastic to see the slow yet meteoric rise of Kevin Barnes. This album makes you listen twice, maybe even three times. Did he say that? Always a story. make sure to check it out on www.hankmusic.tv.

The Apples In Stereo finished up their tour recently with a stop at The Colbert Report… again. Apparently host Stephen Colbert is a big fan (or maybe it’s due to the sweet ode “Stephen, Stephen” that Apples frontman Robert Schneider played the last time he was there). Either way, Mr. Schneider and the rest of his Apples turned out an excellent performance of the track “Can You Feel It?” which you can view here. Be sure to check out all of The Apples In Stereo’s discography, as well as Marbles (Robert’s other project) in HANK™ today.

It seems that troubadour Chris Bathgate (Quite Scientific) will be bringing his breathtaking brand of indie folk-rock to…well, everywhere. Starbucks and iTunes have selected the Chris Bathgate song “Yes, I’m Cold” to be the Starbucks Free Pick of the Week on iTunes… quite a feat for such an indie artist, as previous picks have included such industry heavyweights as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Adele, My Morning Jacket and Sia. The popular java chain will be giving away the free download cards over the next week at all of it’s 7000+ stores across the planet, bringing Chris Bathgate closer to lifelong goal of world domination. Check out all of Chris Bathgate’s music at http://www.hankmusic.tv.

Dr. Dog are quite the busy boys these days. They stopped by Late Night with Conan O’Brien last night to wow the crowd with The Old Days from the very anticipated Fate (Park The Van). Check out the performance here. They will also be stopping by Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW on August 8th to play a 30 min. set. They were Band of the Day on Spin.com yesterday too. The buzz is definitely ear-ringing about Fate which officially drops on Tuesday, but why wait? Dr. Dog’s Fate is available today for your next project in HANK™.
